Mayo clinic study shows purging out senescent cells produces health & longevity benefits
In a Nov. 2 (2011) article that appeared on the very popular ScienceDaily web site (Click to access), a Mayo Clinic study was discussed concerning how senescent cells contribute to aging plus some diseases. From the article:
“Five decades ago, scientists discovered that cells undergo a limited number of divisions before they stop dividing. At that point the cells reach a state of limbo — called cellular senescence — where they neither die nor continue to multiply.
As a result, senescent cells accumulate with age (Though they ”comprise at most only 10 to 15 percent of cells in an elderly individual.”)
Dr. van Deursen and colleagues genetically engineered mice so their senescent cells harbored a molecule called caspase 8 that was only turned on in the presence of a drug that has no effect on normal cells. When the transgenic mice were exposed to this drug, caspase 8 was activated in the senescent cells, drilling holes in the cell membrane to specifically kill the senescent cells.
The researchers found that lifelong elimination of senescent cells delayed the onset of age-related disorders such as cataracts and muscle loss and weakness. Perhaps even more importantly, they showed that removing these cells later in life could slow the progression of already established age-related disorders.”
The bottom line: Purging out senescent cells produced health and thus longevity payoffs. This finding parallels what Dr. Steenblock observed about bone marrow stem cells; namely, that as people age many of their stem cells become senescent. To turn this situation around this Dr. Steenblock came up with a method of purging out these devitalized stem cells using the FDA approved stem cell mobilizing drug Neupogen. The marrow, he found, responds to this purging process by producing new, more youthful and vital stem cell replacements! (Which Dr. Steenblock then harvests using a relatively painless procedure and then gives back to the patient by various means such as intravenous drip.)
