Dr. Steenblock to attend Israstem 2013 conference in Ramat Gan, Israel!

Israeli FlagDr. David Steenblock will be attending the Israstem 2013 conference being held in Ramat Gan, Israel on April 22-23 (2013)! Dr. Steenblock will be there, in part, to share insights and discoveries with fellow doctors who have been involved in the clinical use of adult (nonembryonic) stem cells as well as with leading stem cell researchers from around the world.

This conference, which is being held in collaboration with the Israel Stem Cell Society (ISCS), will feature presentations by such stem cell luminaries as Joanne Kurtzberg, MD
(Duke University Medical Center), and Arnold Caplan, Ph.D.
(Case Western Reserve University).

Like many of those attending Israstem, Dr. Steenblock brings to the table a wealth of experience in stem cell therapeutics. From 2003-7 Dr. Steenblock was adviser to one of the very first medical clinics in the world (Mexico) to use umbilical cord stem cells to treat neurologic disease and disorders including cerebral palsy (This included participating in a pioneering open pilot study of umbilical cord stem cells and cerebral palsy in eight children which was written up as a paper and appeared in the journal Medical Hypotheses & Research). In 2009 he pioneered the use of stem cell-rich bone marrow aspirate (BMAC) to treat a wide of chronic diseases and disorders, a form of stem cell therapy that is legal in the US. The clinical responses of his cerebral palsy patients have been so consistently impressive that Dr. Steenblock as well as other doctors characterize this treatment as “a major medical advance, one almost certain to be the standard-of-care for CP and similar neurological challenges at some point in the future”.

Dr. Steenblock currently serves as executive director of the clinic he founded, Dr. Steenblock’s Clinic (Alexander Thermos, D.O., D.C., Medical Director), and is also President of the Steenblock Research Institute, a nonprofit research facility that includes a massive medical & scientific library and molecular biology R & D laboratory.

Those interested in learning more about Dr. Steenblock and the ongoing work of his researchers and clinic healthcare team as well as those who’d like to discuss specific personal medical issues (with Dr. Thermos) are encouraged to call 1-800-300-1063 (9 am to 5 pm Pacific Time, Monday through Friday). Those who prefer to communicate in writing can do so by clicking this link http://www.stemcellmd.org/1005-2/, then completing the form and submitting it.

Highway sign - direction and exit signJD had a stroke prior or just following his birth which resulted in partial paralysis, slurred speech, seizures, and bad eyesight. This all changed following two stem cell-rich bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) treatments at Dr. Steenblock’s Clinic. This is what JD’s mother Kathy V. shared about her son’s turnaround:

I just wanted to give you an update on JD.  JD had a stroke either shortly before birth or right after, causing left side paralysis along with other common stroke symptoms, such as slurred speech and seizures. JD was 30 yrs old when he had 2 rounds of stem cell therapy, and he is now off all seizure medication, has lost 40 lbs, and was seen by the eye doctor today and has had a 40% improvement in his eyesight. The doctor was amazed and so was JD! No more bi-focals…which he has had since he age 13. I have also noticed that his speech pattern is alot smoother and flows better. Keep up the great work!

Sugar consumption linked to diabetes apart from obesity. How you can get informed help for your diet & health issues!

Golden granulated, light muscovado and dark muscovado sugarFor untold years now we have been made aware of the fact that consuming inordinate amounts of certain unhealthy fats, sugar and salt is bad for our health. Many years back Dr. Steenblock along with many other leading lights in the world of alternative medicine asserted that dietary sugar intake was causing people to develop type 2 diabetes apart from any weight gain or obesity associated with sugar consumption.  Skeptics and so-called quackbusters dismissed this as nonsense and insisted that sugar was the culprit in dental caries and perhaps weight gain and little else. Time was not kind to the naysayers as study after study has pointed to links between dietary sugar intake and various human ills. Now, in 2013, comes a very sweeping epidemiological study carried out by scientists at Stanford University School of Medicine, the University of California-Berkeley and the University of California-San Francisco, in which they rigorously looked at data on sugar availability and diabetes rates in 175 countries over the past ten years. After taking into account obesity and other factors, these researchers found unmistakable evidence that “increased sugar in a population’s food supply was linked to higher diabetes rates, independent of obesity rates” (This is from a lay write-up on the study which you can access at http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/02/130227183452.htm).

If you are wrestling with a chronic disease, perhaps you’ve wondered if something in your diet triggered it and/or is fueling its progression. You can search using Google or other search engines and probably wind up confused, mainly because experts and studies often seem at odds with each other. You will also have to contend with the same skeptics and naysayers who dismissed sugar intake as a direct contributor to diabetes (See above).  It takes knowledge, experience and seasoned judgment to make sound clinical connections and prescribe suitable treatments and remedies, something Dr. Steenblock possesses in abundance. And, he is willing to help you out — for FREE.  That’s right, for free. To nail down your free consultation with Dr. Steenblock call his clinic toll free at 1-800-300-1063 between 9 am and 5 pm Pacific Time, Monday through Friday.

Earlier today an article on Dr. Steenblock appeared on Wikipedia which you can access at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Steenblock. Here is the article in its entirety:

David Steenblock

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

 Jump to: navigation, search

David A. Steenblock (b. January 7, 1943) is an osteopathic physician, biochemist, product formulator and author who founded the first integrative medicine clinic west of the Mississippi River in 1978 and went on to do extensive clinical work and in-office experimentation with hyperbaric oxygen, chelation therapy, herbal medicine, enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP), whole body periodic acceleration, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF), and (since 2005) stem cell rich bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC). He has at various times been a medical and technical consultant to various foreign clinics doing treatments involving the use of pure umbilical cord stem cells (2203-present). Since 2011 he has served as Chief Wellness Officer for SiriCell Technologies which is conducting adaptive design phase 1 & phase 2 clinical studies in various countries in Asia. Dr. Steenblock is also founder and president of Steenblock Research Institute, a 503(C) nonprofit entity located in San Clemente, California that houses a massive medical and scientific library plus a state-of-the-art molecular biology R & D laboratory.

Education

Dr. Steenblock earned his B.S. degree from Iowa State University, then an M.S. in Biochemistry and Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa. His post-doctoral training included three years at Case Western Reserve University, one year at the Oregon Health & Sciences University and a clinical Rotating Internship at Providence Hospital in Seattle, Washington. In addition, he did an externship at the University of Washington Department of Hematology/Oncology in 1969 which included work with stem cell-rich bone marrow. This program was run by Dr. Edward Donnall Thomas (who in 1990 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine & Physiology).

Dr. Steenblock obtained additional training and certification including:

Investigator Training for Medical Research, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Strong Memorial Hospital and Western Institutional Review Board (September 2006)

Wound Care Education InstituteCertification in Skin and Wound Management (January 2007)

Certificate in Pain Management and End of Life Care Institute for Medical Quality (January 2007)

Career

Dr. Steenblock commenced his medical career by training in pathology. During the late 1970s he founded the first integrative medicine clinic west of the Mississippi River (Wholistic Medical Center, El Toro, California) which focused on the prevention and treatment of chronic degenerative diseases. His clinic relocated to Mission Viejo, California in 1994 and for the next 5 years operated as “The Brain Therapeutics Medical Clinic”. In 2006 his clinic became “David A. Steenblock, D.O. Inc., Personalized Regenerative Medicine” (Dr. Steenblock’s Clinic) and has since focused on personalized medical intervention for various chronic diseases plus age-related issues and aging management (antiaging). Among the modalities Dr. Steenblock utilizes is hyperbaric oxygen, chelation therapy, herbal medicine, enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP), whole body periodic acceleration, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF), and (since 2005) stem cell rich bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC).

During his lengthy career Dr. Steenblock has also held a number of positions and appointments including:

President, The International Oxidative Medicine Association (1995 – 1998)

President, Orange County Osteopathic Society (1985)

American College of Advancement in Medicine Board of Directors (1981 – 1985) Treasurer (1985 – 1991) Chairman, Scientific Committee (1990 – 1991)

Medical Editor, Let’s Live Magazine (1986 – 1993)

Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine, Preceptor Training Program, University of Michigan College of Osteopathic Medicine (1982 – 1986)

Preceptor, Bastyr University Center for Natural Health (2004 – 2006)

Controversy

Dr. Steenblock has been subject to regulatory action by the Osteopathic Medical Board of California, something publicized in detail on Quackwatch by Dr. Stephen Barrett in entries such as Regulatory Action against David Steenblock, D.O. (1993-1994) and Regulatory Action against David Steenblock, D.O. (1997-2000). What these decisions and Dr. Barrett’s coverage of them do not reflect are issues, contrary evidence and claims of bias put forward by Dr. Steenblock and others. These have been summarized in Goliath v. David.

In addition, many critics and skeptics have taken exception to Dr. Steenblock’s use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for chronic stroke, something he began using in conjunction with specific IV and other therapies in 1988. Quackwatch’s Stephen Barrett stated in “A Skeptical Look at David Steenblock, D.O.” (2010) that “It is true that strokes are caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. However, there is no scientific evidence that increasing oxygen delivery to the brain after an acute episode is over can stimulate cells to regenerate.”

In 2013, a major randomized, prospective Israeli study was published in PLOS Clinical Trials in which the authors reported that “… HBOT can lead to significant neurological improvements in post stroke patients even at chronic late stages”1

Dr. Barrett’s highly critical article titled “A Skeptical Look at David Steenblock, D.O.” (mentioned above) was rebutted in Beware of Quackwatch (2012).

Patience, Determination, Perseverance: Melany (Melly) Geary writes about her stem cell turnaround (cerebral palsy)

FREE CALL GRAPHIC - PHONE & STETHOSCOPEPatience. Determination. Perseverance.  I think that is what has been guiding me through this process among other things, and my whole life really. To say, my heart beats to the sound of it’s own drum is an understatement especially when it comes to gaining more mobility and independence. I have never been one to agree with traditional medicine. Why? It does not make sense to me. I firmly believe the body can heal itself. In other words, the body “knows” what it needs in order to be able to return to balance. What would a drug be able to do that the human body cannot? What makes giving a person a drug the correct answer, or the best choice? Being a preemie, I was given so many drugs to keep me alive affecting my system; I could not handle it. Made me more sensitive in some respects. As if that was not enough, having my parents’ second daughter be diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy at eighteen months, and son with autism at two-and-a half-years-old did not help things either, as they were not getting the answers they wanted turning attention to my mother.  Told by countless doctors, “Your daughter will never be able to walk, or talk” for instance, did not sit right with her. So she took elsewhere, turned her back on traditional western medicine and began looking outside the box. Went on a quest to save her children. To her, there had to be something out there.  I think this is where my love for my alternative methods comes from :) Is it any wonder why from the things I’ve described?

Being intuitive, I have always done things my own way, in my own time. I am not like everyone else, and never have been. Meaning, I am not the type of person who will do “anything to help” me heal/ balance my body, unless I agree, or know it will assist. That being said, one could guess, I was never interested in looking into any invasive surgeries when offered. Botox is an example. But that is only putting lightly. In all truthfulness, I fought my parents. As a child, I knew it was not going to work, and most of the time, I was right.  Now that does not mean I did not check out other things thrown my way, but anything involving knives, needles, drugs and the like, I dismissed. I understood there was something else out there to help me walk (aside from not being ready) I just had not come across it yet. And it was not time, knowing I would come across it later. The answer: Stem cells.

How I found out about the procedure: My mother was at a conference last June when she heard from one of Doctor Steenblock’s colleagues, and renowned physician, Dr. Todd Ovokaitys, speaking about a stem cell treatment working with cerebral palsy bringing incredible results. I did not even think twice before saying yes when she mentioned it to me. I had a gut feeling so to speak, and knew I should look into it. Reading the papers, and watching the news regarding research being done with stem cells, cancer and recently autism motivated me even more; gave me hope. With that, I began making contact, and took it from there. I was on my own having my mother’s support of course, but if I wanted to do this, it was my responsibility. Seemed reasonable since I am twenty, almost twenty-one.

The Treatment: The day finally came when miracles began to happen, and I mean miracles (no exaggeration). On October 2nd, 2012 I came in confident. Feeling a sense of gratitude for this opportunity, I met with both Dr. Steenblock and Dr. Todd ready to get the show on the road. Originally, the plan was to have the cells injected into my spine, but because I am healthy, the plans changed, now for them to be injected intravenously. Approximately two thousand stem cells were given to me. To assist the cells in terms of directing them in all the right places more easily, a laser used by Dr. Todd, went over all sides of my brain, and down my spine. And soon after (thirty minutes) magic began to happen!

Now for the fun part: Describing the results so far!

I will not go into explaining everything I have been experiencing as there is quite a lot, only the highlights over certain periods of time.

Day of procedure: While I had intentions, (the most important wanting to walk independently), I have to be honest and say I was not expecting to notice results if not (within thirty minutes).  Or the type of results anyway. I began noticing my hands felt much softer, more relaxed, and I was able to extenuate my fingers on both hands; something I have never been able to do. Even my legs felt softer, softer than they have in a long time, which was encouraging. The best part: I was able to breath; my diaphragm was not so tight. I could finally take a deep breath. The observations kept coming. When I arrived home, I noticed it was easier for me to get up the couch using my left leg (my left being my weaker side). Family members could understand me on the phone; my speech was clearer.

Day after treatment: I used to use so much energy throughout the day to do tasks, to get around even. When night came, I was exhausted only to feel tired the next morning. Well, the morning after my treatment, I woke up alert and refreshed, a feeling I have not experienced since I was a little girl. My legs felt even more relaxed, and I began to take notice of when I became tight, being able to release some. A huge step, as I always took my spasticity for granted, only paying attention when it became uncomfortable.

One week: Understanding this was a process that would take time I was shocked when I was able to extend my legs to ten degrees while having a massage. Having the ability to stretch to that extent seemed obtainable, while by the same token, a thing of the past seeing the last time I reached this point, I was twelve! My vision began to improve in my right eye as well. For a girl who often gets headaches, I found I was not experiencing them as frequently due to eyestrain and weather to name a few reasons.

Three weeks: I began seeing my trainer at the gym again at this point. Testing the amount strength in my legs, he asked me to stand up once with support and once without. Standing up with support was a piece a cake. However, I was not sure how standing up by myself would be. To my surprise, I was able to do it having more strength than I thought :) Around this same time, I became more aware of just how tight I actually was in particular areas of my body. While I was “softer”, not every area had gotten the message to relax. One day I would observe my hip was tight. The next day my back. Varying from day-to-day. Again, I never payed attention, and to have the ability…Wow! My walking too improved quite a bit (when using my walker), as my right foot was able to go all the way flat.

A month-and-a half: Getting in the car was a bit of challenge, as one may be able to imagine. The left side was avoidable as much as possible. I often would catch my foot on the runner of my mom’s Suburban, and one day, the habit broke taking a much shorter amount of time. Continuing training at the gym, I finally was able to take a few steps independently, but not very far. Still, an accomplishment. Which leads me to explaining how I had more energy in being able to walk (with my mom’s support) all the way up to the front steps of an individual’s home without becoming tired.  Walking a few feet to be in fact. When walking in this fashion, I could not take many steps without wanting to collapse. So it is appropriate to say I reached yet another milestone. To add to that, being the veracious reader I am, it was difficult for me to read a few sentences aloud without having to stop in order to take a breath. Get the words out. I would skip sentences, pausing often. Now that is not as apparent, but once in awhile, I will jump a sentence or two :)

Two Months: I kept making progress, but this time in the area of swallowing pills. Growing up, I struggled with this until about a year-and-half ago. Taking time to work up to two pills and so on. With the help of the cells, swallowing two pills has become second nature. I am currently working up to three. Even my posture is better, and people, who have not seen me and/or did not know I had a treatment, are noticing this, and I was told I am much more clear when talking on the phone. One more thing: Traveling and my spasticity went hand in hand making it inevitable. Simply put, I would be the tightest I have ever been. This was just how it was, or so I thought until I took a trip last month. On the last flight home then, I did not tighten up until about half way through! Another huge, but small improvement.

Three Months: We have reached present time. Does not seem like it has been that long since this journey began. While it has been a step-by step process, the other day, I was able to achieve something so arduous: Putting on/tying my shoes (without my leg braces) in less than fifteen minutes. Strenuous as this was, I could not use both my hands, having to use one in the act of loosing my balance. I was looking at fifteen to thirty minutes of pure struggle. My shoe would fall off. It would be on the wrong foot. I was not able to tie my shoelaces with it on. Yes, I still used one hand, and hoped I put each one on the correct foot (I think I did), but nonetheless achieved. In other news, my mother and I have been stretching every day, and my right leg is almost, if not completely straight. My left leg however, is having more of a challenge, but it will happen. All in time. All in time.

While all of this exciting, there is one thing I feel stands out among the rest: My legs finally feel connected to me, as they never used to believing there were two separate parts. Pretty extraordinary. And to think, there is more to come :)

A cautionary word about fat stem cell treatments

CAUTION SIGN - FREE MS GRAPHICThe use of fat stem cells is not without risk, something brought into sharp focus late last year (2012) when stories surfaced in the media concerning a lady in Los Angeles who had a cosmetic procedure in which mesenchymal stem cells isolated from her own harvested fat were injected around her eyes along with a FDA approved dermal filler used to reduce wrinkles. The dermal filler contained calcium hydroxylapatite which nudged the stem cells to become bone which had to then be surgically removed. If you didn’t catch this story you can read about it by clicking this link.

Fat tissue is rich in biologically versatile mesenchymal stem cells and for this reason many researchers and doctors justifiably feel they could revolutionize some aspects of medicine. Not surprisingly doctors in the US and abroad, especially cosmetic surgeons, latched on to fat stem cells and began employing them in various guises (purified, minimally manipulated, etc.) to do cosmetic procedures and treat various diseases and medical conditions. Physician and adult (nonembryonic) stem cell expert Dr. David Steenblock worked for a very brief time with adipose stem cells but abandoned them for a number of reasons including certain safety concerns (More on this below), the FDA’s classification of them as constituting a new drug (Click to read more), and the fact they did not produce healing outcomes greater than what he had seen in the stem cell-rich bone marrow aspirate treatments he has been doing had doing since 2005 (Nota bene: Dr. Steenblock processes the stem cell-rich bone marrow aspirate he employs to treat patients in a way that fully complies with the FDA’s rules concerning minimum manipulation. Click to read his clinic’s statement of compliance).

One clinically defining difference between fat stem cells and those from bone marrow is this: While bone marrow stem cells naturally migrate from bone into all our bloodstreams and then make their way to tissues and organs through the human body including the brain where they participate in repair and restorative activities, something which constitutes a natural healing mechanism and health supportive role for bone marrow stem cells, the same cannot be said of fat stem cells. They are not, for instance, summoned to the brain when injury or disease strikes.

Of course, many foreign clinics use a patient’s own fat stem cells to treat a variety of diseases and there are certainly many glowing patient stories and very few horror stories connected with these treatments. With this said, this hardly constitutes credible proof that there are no risks connected with this, especially long term. We are, after all, not talking about augmenting a natural mechanism – adding bone marrow stem cells to shore up already mobilized and engrafted bone marrow – but introducing fat stem cells which are not normally part of nature’s own healing kit.

For adults with serious diseases who have little to lose long term by doing a treatment or series of treatments involving fat derived stem cells, Dr. Steenblock does caution them to make sure they have no tumors or microtumors in their body. Why? There is evidence that fat tissue progenitor cells naturally gravitate to tumors and participate in processes linked to their growth and perhaps spread (Two abstracts concerning this follow below). To infuse a patient who has such tumors or microtumors with fat stem cells would thus be akin to throwing gasoline on a fire.

Naturally Dr. Steenblock is concerned that foreign clinics and renegade ones in the US that process fat stem cells beyond what the FDA allows may be putting their patients (especially young folks) at elevated risk of complications and other problems down the road

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23038706Human periprostatic white adipose tissue is rich in stromal progenitor cells and a potential source of prostate tumor stroma

Abstract

A body of growing evidence now implicates white adipose tissue as a relevant source of stromal progenitor cells recruited to the tumor microenvironment to form supportive tumor stroma. While the role of periprostatic (PP) adipose tissue in prostate cancer progression has been barely appreciated, we sought to determine the progenitor cell population in PP adipose tissue and the association with prostate cancer. We isolated and characterized CD31(-)CD34(+)CD45(-)CD146(-) progenitor cells (adipose-derived stem cells [ASC]) in paired samples of PP and preperitoneal visceral adipose tissue from prostate tissue and peripheral blood mononuclear cells of prostate cancer and nodular prostatic hyperplasia patients. ASC were quantified by flow cytometry and confirmed through target gene expression. Here we show a significantly higher amount of ASC in PP than in visceral adipose tissue, independent of body mass index and prostatic disease. In the prostate, ASC are increased in cancer compared with prostatic nodular hyperplasia patients. Concordantly, adipsin gene (CFD) expression, which is known to be up-regulated in adipose stem cells, was overexpressed in PP adipose tissue, in the prostate of cancer patients and in prostate CD31(-)CD34(+)CD45(-)CD146(-) sorted cells. ASC were found at higher levels in the blood of prostate cancer patients simultaneously overweight/obese. Present findings indicate that PP adipose tissue is a reservoir of progenitor cells with the potential to migrate towards prostate tumors, although its clinical significance merits further evaluation.

Abstract

Recruitment of stem cells and partially differentiated progenitor cells is a process which accompanies and facilitates the progression of cancer. One of the factors complicating the clinical course of cancer is obesity, a progressively widespread medical condition resulting from overgrowth of white adipose tissue (WAT), commonly known as white fat. The mechanisms by which obesity influences cancer risk and progression are not completely understood. Cells of WAT secret soluble molecules (adipokines) that could stimulate tumor growth, although there is no consensus on which cell populations and which adipokines are important. Recent reports suggest that WAT-derived mesenchymal stem (stromal) cells, termed adipose stem cells (ASC), may represent a cell population linking obesity and cancer. Studies in animal models demonstrate that adipokines secreted by ASC can promote tumor growth by assisting in formation of new blood vessels, a process necessary for expansion of tumor mass. Importantly, migration of ASC from WAT to tumors has been demonstrated, indicating that the tumor microenvironment in cancer may be modulated by ASC-derived trophic factors in a paracrine rather than in an endocrine manner. Here, we review possible positive and adverse implications of progenitor cell recruitment into the diseased sites with a particular emphasis on the role in cancer progression of progenitors that are expanded in obesity.

Hyperbaric oxygen for chronic stroke: A major Israeli study says “It works” — even years later!

HBOT CHAMBERS Dr. Steenblock began using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for chronic stroke in 1989 and in the more than twenty (20) years since has treated scores of chronic stroke patients and written and spoken extensively about the improvements he has seen during that time*. Not unexpectedly, his pioneering use of hyperbaric oxygen to improve brain damaged stroke patients was met with sometimes hostile remarks and articles by so-called skeptics and medical journalists. Among them was Quackwatch’s own Stephen Barrett, MD who wrote this in an article titled “A Skeptical Look at David Steenblock, D.O.” (Readers interested in a section-by-section critical rebuttal of Barrett’s article are invited to read “Beware of Quackwatch” at http://bit.ly/KJlSXC):

“The treatments that seem to interest Steenblock most are hyperbaric oxygen therapy and stem cell therapy. According to an article on the Stroke Doctor Web site:

Strokes are caused by a lack of oxygen to a part of the brain. Long term effects are caused by the continued lack of oxygen, the swelling of brain tissue and the accumulation of calcium within the damaged nerve cells. Dr. Steenblock’s neuro-rehab program is designed to bring oxygen back to these starved cells, reduce swelling, and provide the nutrients needed to help the cells remove their waste and restore normal metabolic function [6].

It is true that strokes are caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. However, there is no scientific evidence that increasing oxygen delivery to the brain after an acute episode is over can stimulate cells to regenerate.”

Recently a very rigorous Israeli clinical study on HBOT and chronic stroke was published in the open access journal PLOS Clinical Trials. The results of the study were written up as a paper titled “Hyperbaric Oxygen Induces Late Neuroplasticity in Post Stroke Patients – Randomized, Prospective Trial” which can be access at  http://bit.ly/10cVdNA. The conclusion tells the tale:

“The results indicate that HBOT can lead to significant neurological improvements in post stroke patients even at chronic late stages. The observed clinical improvements imply that neuroplasticity can still be activated long after damage onset in regions where there is a brain SPECT/CT (anatomy/physiology) mismatch.”

If this somewhat technical jargon is leaving you glassy-eyed, here is something from a lay-level write-up on this study that appeared on the ScienceDaily website on 1-23-2013:

“For their study, the researchers sought post stroke patients whose condition was no longer improving. To assess the potential impact of HBOT treatment, the anatomical features and functionality of the brain were evaluated using a combination of CT scans to identify necrotic tissue, and SPECT scans to determine the metabolic activity level of the neurons surrounding damaged areas.

“Seventy-four participants spanning 6 to 36 months post-stroke were divided into two groups. The first treatment group received HBOT from the beginning of the study, and the second received no treatment for two months, then received a two-month period of HBOT treatment. Treatment consisted of 40 two-hour sessions five times weekly in high pressure chambers containing oxygen-rich air. The results indicate that HBOT treatment can lead to significant improvement in brain function in post stroke patients even at chronically late stages, helping neurons strengthen and build new connections in damaged regions.”

Also:

“Although the study focuses on patients only through three years post-stroke, Dr. Efrati has seen similar improvement in patients whose brain injuries occurred up to 20 years before, belying the concept that the brain has a limited window for growth and change.”
